A 54-year-old South African man has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after authorities discovered suspected cocaine concealed in his luggage. The suspect, believed to be a drug mule en route to Hong Kong, was intercepted by police on Thursday following an intelligence-led operation.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lt Col Amanda van Wyk confirmed the arrest, saying the interception was based on actionable intelligence about the suspect’s movements.
The suspected drug trafficker is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court this Friday to face drug trafficking charges. While the exact street value and weight of the seized cocaine are still being determined, this incident highlights an ongoing crackdown on smuggling at South Africa’s busiest port of entry.
This OR Tambo drug bust follows two similar high-profile interceptions last week, where police seized separate cocaine shipments with a staggering combined estimated value of R200 million.
According to SAPS, law enforcement remains highly committed to dismantling international drug trafficking syndicates. By utilizing targeted port-of-entry interventions and intelligence-driven operations, police are actively disrupting smuggling routes and securing the airport.
