Olu Jacobs, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest and most revered actors, has passed away at the age of 84. His wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, announced the devastating news, describing the legendary performer as “The Lion of Lufodo” and stating that his was a life “well lived and fought.”
A Giant of African Cinema
Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before launching a prolific career that bridged international stages, British television productions, and classic Nollywood cinema.
Over a career spanning more than fifty years, Jacobs became a foundational pillar and father figure of Nigeria’s thriving film industry. Known for his commanding screen presence, deep resonant voice, and incredible versatility, he starred in numerous iconic productions, including My Kingdom, Covert Operation, and One Fine Day.
His immense contributions earned him widespread acclaim, including the African Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, numerous lifetime achievement honors, and the national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), which he was conferred with in 2011. Beyond his on-screen work, Jacobs and his wife jointly established the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, playing an instrumental role in mentoring and training generations of Nigerian artists.
Private Battles and Tributes
In recent years, Jacobs largely stepped away from the public spotlight due to health challenges. In 2021, Silva courageously shared that her husband had been diagnosed with Dementia with Lewy bodies, a degenerative brain condition. Despite previous health scares and occasional internet death hoaxes—which his family promptly debunked—Jacobs remained a beloved and enduring fixture in the hearts of millions of fans across Africa and the global diaspora.
As tributes pour in from colleagues, dignitaries, and adoring fans across the continent, the family has requested privacy during their time of grief.
